Physical + Digital Product Research & Design

Future vision for smart home appliances

LG partnered with me to envision a future-forward, intuitive, multi-modal user interface for their premium line of home appliances. We conducted research, then designed the physical and digital interfaces for the appliance line, building in AI and intelligence from the foundation up.

Duration

9 weeks

Team

Multi-disciplinary (ID, UXR, IXD, VXD, Motion Design, Product Owners)

My Role

I led the research phase, sharing key insights with the design team. I then transitioned to one of two interaction design roles, and partnered with the Industrial Designer on the the form and function of the appliance. I designed the interaction system and AI agent model, along with collaborating on the material, style, and affordances of the physical products.

Solution

We designed two options for the future vision of premium line of smart LG appliances. These two options were tested in the market to determine the most successful.

  1. View Point: Scored highest in testing, and selected as the go-to-market product line.
  2. Action Bar

Primary & secondary market research

I led the research phase, conducting both primary user research and secondary market research. I used the People, Spaces, Devices, Services framework to ensure comprehensive insights to guide the product design phase.

Industrial Design

I worked hand-in-hand with industrial design on materials, sizing, aesthetics, and usability. We made true-to-size models to test the sizing. We also determined the necessary components needed for the product and where those components should be installed (i.e. camera, mic, speaker).

Let’s chat about how these insights influenced the decisions of the design team. I’d be happy to walk you through my strategy and process.
